UP to use railways’ novel corona care isolation coaches

LUCKNOW: After Telangana and Delhi, UP might be the third state to use rail coaches converted to Covid Care isolation rakes by the railways. UP has finalised 24 stations, said a press release from the PIB.
A letter issued by UP’s principal secretary, Health, UP government, Amit Mohan Prasad to CMOs of the districts where isolation rakes will be used has laid down the protocol for maintenance and use of these rakes.

Telangana has asked for coaches to be stationed in three locations- Secunderabad, Kachiguda and Adilabad. In Delhi, 10 coaches are stationed at 1 Shakurbasti location .

The UP government might use 24 rakes at different railway stations across four zones in the state, Northern Railway (NR); North Eastern Railway (NER); East Central Railway (ECR) and North Central Railway (NCR).

“Government has issued the protocol to be followed by the railways and UP government,” said Lucknow DRM (NR), Sanjay Tripathi, who is the nodal officer.

Every rake has ten coaches. Going by the fact that every coach can admit 16 patients at a time, 10 coaches can accommodate 160 patients at a time.

Every rake would have two coaches for the medical and the supporting staff.

As per instructions issued by the state government, CMO of the district will be the nodal authority for maintenance and handling of Covid Care rakes at the railway station in the district under his jurisdiction.

CMOs have been asked to visit the railway stations identified in their districts and ensure implementation of the protocol within a week.

As per instructions, railways will disinfect and clean the rake before handing it over to the state government. Once in use, coaches will be taken care of by the government.

“In the Lucknow division we have 20 rakes ready,” the DRM added.
